Bemus Point Rebuild Adds Accessible Launch Features on Chautauqua Lake

The Bemus Point State Boat Launch and Fishing Access Site on Chautauqua Lake has a completed rebuild, with improvements aimed at getting more people onto the water. New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation announced the project’s completion on September 24 after reconstruction began last fall.

The work replaced the boat launch and added new boat docks and an anchored, floating kayak launch. Accessible parking near the launch, improved sidewalks, and motion-sensor, solar-powered lighting are among the features intended to make the site easier to use. DEC identifies the project’s accessibility features as compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The shoreline changed along with the launch infrastructure. Crews removed the concrete seawall and replaced it with stone riprap and a vegetated shoreline. The $685,000 project was funded through NY Works, which supports repairs and maintenance of state environmental infrastructure, including fishing access sites.

For anglers, the practical result is an upgraded public entry point to Chautauqua Lake for both trailered boats and kayaks. Infrastructure that makes launching and moving around the site easier is a direct investment in fishing access, especially for people who face barriers at older facilities.
