California Dove Opener Brings Public-Land Opportunity and Clear Rules

California’s Sept. 1 dove opener is more than another date on the calendar. For a lot of hunters, it is the first real signal that fall is here, and for plenty of new hunters it is their first legal bird hunt.

The season opens for mourning dove and white-winged dove one-half hour before sunrise on Sept. 1 and runs through Sept. 15 for the first split. The second half runs Nov. 14 through Dec. 28, 2026. The combined daily bag limit is 15 birds, with no more than 10 white-winged doves. Possession is triple the daily bag.

CDFW is pointing hunters toward public opportunity across the Sacramento, San Joaquin, Imperial and Colorado River valleys, including places like Gray Lodge, Upper Butte Basin, Los Banos, North Grasslands, Mendota, San Jacinto, Imperial Valley wildlife areas and the Palo Verde Ecological Reserve. Those fields do not appear by magic. Staff plant and manage crops like safflower, sunflower, wheat and cereal grains to hold birds and support broader wildlife habitat.

Hunters still have to handle their end. You need a valid hunting license, HIP validation, upland game bird validation unless exempt as a junior hunter, and the proper area pass where required. Entry rules can vary by wildlife area, so check before you burn gas and show up at the gate.

This is exactly why legal hunters matter. License dollars and validation fees help pay for habitat, access and management. Go shoot straight, know the limits, respect the ground and bring home wild food the right way.
