Lake McConaughy Low Water Pushes Boaters Toward Private Launch Services

Low water is changing the access game at Nebraska’s Lake McConaughy, and boaters need to plan before they show up at the ramp.

Nebraska Game and Parks says private boat launch services will be the best access option at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area for the rest of the season as drought continues to drop water levels at the Keith County irrigation reservoir. Water levels were last this low in 2006.

As of August 7, Spillway Bay’s single-lane ramp was the only ramp still in the water. Officials expect the lake to drop below that ramp’s 3,202-foot elevation within the month. Most recreation services remain available, but anyone trying to launch a boat or camp with an RV or bus on the beach is being told to schedule launch services ahead of time.

The state listed three local vendors providing launch service: Van’s Lakeview, Ski Patrol, and Big Mac Marina. Boaters launching from the beach on their own do it at their own risk, and officials warn that changing shoreline conditions and underwater hazards are a real concern. They also say boaters should not travel past Sand Point on the far western end of the lake.

This is what drought looks like when it hits access. The fishery and the lake are still there, but ramps, shorelines, safety, and common sense change fast. If you are headed to Lake Mac, call ahead, use the right launch, and do not turn a fishing trip into a recovery call.
