Montana State Park Keeps Hunting Open With Weekly Lottery at Missouri Headwaters

Montana is putting a weekly lottery on hunting access at Missouri Headwaters State Park near Three Forks, and the important part is this: hunting is staying on the landscape.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will limit access to six hunters per day at the roughly 560-acre park where the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin rivers come together to form the Missouri. Applications open Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Aug. 26, with hunters picking three preferred days for the following week. Selected hunters get one date and a parking permit. The weekly system is scheduled to run through Jan. 15, 2027.

This is what access fights often look like in the real world. A small, popular public place has hunters, anglers, campers, hikers, boaters and wildlife watchers all stacked on top of each other. Instead of shutting hunters out, FWP is capping pressure, tightening the map, and keeping legal hunting alive with rules people can actually follow.

Rifles are prohibited, while shotguns, handguns, muzzleloaders and archery gear are allowed where applicable. Anyone drawing a day needs to know the open and closed areas before stepping in. Public access survives when hunters prove we can use it responsibly and still push back when somebody tries to erase us completely.
