Nebraska Commission to Vote on 2027 Mountain Lion and Bighorn Sheep Seasons

Nebraska has real wildlife management business on the calendar, and hunters should not sleep through it.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is set to meet Friday, August 14, at the Blair Public Library. Commissioners are expected to vote on 2027 mountain lion season changes, including expanding the Niobrara Unit, altering permit structures, and increasing harvest limits in certain units.

They are also expected to vote on a 2027 bighorn sheep regular hunting season that would authorize one lottery permit and one auction permit, with the proposed season running December 1 through December 22, 2027 if approved. Other business includes sportfishing regulation changes, paddlefish application timing, budget priorities, and Fish and Wildlife Education fee schedules.

This is exactly why commission meetings matter. Predator management and rare big-game opportunity should be handled with data, population goals, habitat reality, and field experience — not emotion from people who do not want any legal harvest at all.

Legal, regulated hunting is a management tool. It funds conservation, keeps people connected to the resource, and gives agencies a controlled way to manage wildlife populations. Nebraska sportsmen should be in the room when those decisions are made, because silence gets counted too.
