Oregon Commission Meeting Puts Furbearer Rules and Fall Salmon Seasons on the Table

Oregon hunters, anglers, and trappers have a Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting on June 26 that deserves attention.

The official business meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. at the Redmond Grange, with agenda items that include the 2027-29 agency requested budget, 2027-28 furbearer regulations, and 2026 coastal fall salmon seasons. There is also a June 25 field tour focused on sagebrush habitat restoration for the Crooked River mule deer herd range.

That is a lot of real management in one room: mule deer habitat, furbearer rules, salmon seasons, and the budget blueprint that helps decide what the agency can actually do on the ground. These are not abstract policy conversations. They turn into trapping rules, fishing opportunity, habitat projects, enforcement capacity, and the way Oregon handles wildlife for the next few years.

Sportsmen should be especially awake in Oregon right now because the fight is bigger than one meeting. Initiative Petition 28 has been hanging over the state as a threat to hunting, fishing, trapping, and science-based management by attacking exemptions tied to animal-use laws. Whether the debate is a commission agenda or a ballot measure, the same rule applies: if the people who live outdoors do not show up, somebody else will write the future for them.

Fall salmon seasons need to be managed carefully. Furbearers need rules based on populations, habitat, conflict, and legal harvest, not emotion. Mule deer country needs actual habitat work, not speeches. Budgets need to put money where it helps wildlife and public opportunity, not just feed bureaucracy.
