SSI Launches Invasive Species Management Specialty for Divers

Divers just got another practical tool in the fight against invasive species. SSI has launched a new Invasive Species Management Specialty, and the course is built around more than just knowing what a lionfish looks like.

The certification is aimed at certified divers 16 and older and focuses heavily on the Indo-Pacific lionfish invasion, responsible removal practices, safety, specialized gas planning, and proper use of eradication equipment. SSI says it is now a full Specialty certification inside its Total Teaching System, with digital student materials, instructor presentation tools, and formal certification processing.

That is the right direction. Invasive species work underwater is not a stunt and it is not a free-for-all. Lionfish removal can help protect reef fish and habitat, but divers need to know the biology, the local rules, the gear, and the risks before they start sticking venomous fish on a reef.

Good conservation does not always look like locking people out. Sometimes it looks like trained outdoorsmen and watermen getting in the water and doing hard, legal removal work where native ecosystems are getting hammered.

If dive shops and local crews use this course to tie training into real regional conservation projects, that is a win. Teach the skill, respect the resource, follow the law, and take invasive pressure off the reef where it makes sense.
