Two Illegal Turkeys Lead to Lifetime Hunting Ban in Tennessee Poaching Case

Two illegally killed turkeys in Tennessee turned into a much bigger case, and the ending is exactly the kind of message poachers need to hear: a lifetime hunting ban.

TWRA says the case started March 28 after a citizen reported two wild turkeys illegally killed near Alexandria and provided a photo of the suspect vehicle. That tip helped game wardens identify the vehicle owner and start digging.

Investigators later found problems in Austin Hale’s harvest records. According to TWRA, deer in his possession had been killed outside legal seasons and then reported as if they were taken during open season. Search warrants on digital devices and his residence uncovered evidence of illegal wildlife harvests dating back to at least 2023. Wardens seized 18 deer mounts, 52 turkey beards, 84 turkey spurs and one turkey fan mount, with TWRA saying the vast majority had been obtained illegally.

Hale pleaded guilty July 24 to six counts of illegal possession of wildlife. The court permanently revoked his hunting privileges, ordered forfeiture of the seized wildlife parts, sentenced him to six years of supervised probation and required a $1,000 donation to the Tennessee Hunter Education Fund in lieu of forfeiting two deer mounts. His revocation was also entered into the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, meaning participating states can recognize the ban.

That is not a hunter getting jammed up over a mistake. That is years of stealing wildlife from the public. Legal hunters buy licenses, follow seasons, tag animals and eat what they kill. Poachers hide, lie and waste the resource. There is a hard line between the two, and this case shows why citizen tips and game wardens matter.
