Wisconsin Upriver Lakes Sturgeon Spearing Applications Are Due August 1

Wisconsin sturgeon spearers have until August 1, 2026, to apply for a 2027 Upriver Lakes tag or buy a preference point. The drawing covers the Upriver Lakes portion of the Winnebago System: Poygan, Winneconne, and Butte des Morts.

Only 500 license holders are selected for those Upriver Lakes tags. That cap exists because the shallower lakes often have better water clarity than Lake Winnebago, which can mean higher success rates. When success is high, harvest can climb fast, and lake sturgeon are not a fish you manage casually. They are long-lived, slow to replace, and worth protecting with hard numbers instead of wishful thinking.

The Wisconsin DNR says tags are issued through a drawing, with priority going to applicants with the most preference points. Group applications are ranked by the person in the group with the lowest point total. Applicants who are not drawn get a preference point and can still buy a Lake Winnebago spearing license by the deadline. Selected Upriver Lakes applicants will be notified by October 1.

The 2027 Winnebago System sturgeon spearing season opens February 13, 2027, and can run up to 16 days unless annual biologically based harvest caps are reached first. That is the kind of structure that keeps a traditional harvest alive without pretending the resource is unlimited.

Sturgeon spearing is one of those outdoor traditions that survives because people accept rules, deadlines, tags, reporting, and harvest caps.
