California’s recreational Dungeness crab season is scheduled to open November 7, 2026, in most areas, but crabbers need to check both their fishing location and their gear before heading out. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s October 30 announcement leaves a northern stretch closed because of domoic acid and prohibits recreational crab traps from the Oregon border to Point Conception until at least January 1, 2027.

The health closure covers state waters from Cape Mendocino, at 40° 10′ N latitude, to the southern boundary of Ten Mile State Marine Reserve, at 39° 33.3′ N latitude. Recreational take or possession of Dungeness crab is prohibited in those waters. Using hoop nets or snares does not provide an exception to that closure. CDFW says testing found unhealthy domoic acid levels in crabs collected north of Fort Bragg, in the southern Humboldt County and northern Mendocino County area.

Outside closed waters, hoop nets and crab snares, also called loop traps, are not affected by the recreational crab-trap restriction. CDFW says hoop nets must be serviced every two hours and cannot be left unattended longer than that. This is a distinction between allowed gear types, not a blanket opening of every fishing location: other area closures and applicable recreational fishing rules still matter.

The broader trap prohibition covers Fishing Zones 1 through 5, from the California–Oregon border to Point Conception at 34° 27′ N latitude. CDFW cites confirmed humpback whale entanglements this year and high whale abundance on the fishing grounds. The agency also issued a fleet advisory and asks recreational crabbers to avoid setting any gear where whales are present.

Commercial Dungeness crab fishing in those same five zones is delayed until at least January 1, 2027. That date is not a guaranteed commercial opening or a guaranteed end to the recreational trap prohibition. CDFW expects another risk assessment in mid-December, when the director will consider available data and a recommendation from the Dungeness Crab Fishing Gear Working Group.

The domoic acid closure has a separate health-based reopening test. It remains in place until the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, in consultation with the California Department of Public Health’s State Public Health Officer, determines that the toxin no longer presents a significant public health risk. The November 7 opener elsewhere does not lift it, and the whale-risk review is not a substitute for that health clearance.

For a legal opening-day trip, check the CDFW health advisories and closure page for the location, the Whale Safe Fisheries page for current gear restrictions, and the agency’s crab fishing information for applicable regulations. The practical takeaway is straightforward: the season opening, the toxin closure and the trap prohibition are different restrictions, and a trip has to comply with all of them.
