Oregon Commission to Vote on Steelhead Protections and Bear-Cougar Trap Check Rules

Oregon’s Fish and Wildlife Commission has a meeting loaded with issues that touch both fish and hunters.

The commission is scheduled to meet Friday, August 14, at ODFW headquarters in Salem with an online stream available. Agenda items include ratifying 20 emergency rule changes, including North Umpqua steelhead angling closures, Deschutes River wild summer steelhead protections, and adjusted sage-grouse controlled hunt permit numbers.

The commission is also set to vote on explicit rules for bear and cougar trap check times tied to damage-control protocols. That may sound narrow, but predator management rules have a way of becoming political battlegrounds fast. Clear rules matter, and so does making sure they still allow real management when livestock, property, or wildlife populations are on the line.

Oregon already has an active anti-hunting and anti-fishing push in the background with Initiative Petition 28. That makes every regulatory meeting worth watching. You do not defend hunting, fishing, and trapping by only paying attention after the ballot language is printed and the damage is done.

Steelhead need honest conservation. Predators need lawful management. Hunters and anglers need a commission that follows science instead of pressure campaigns. That only happens when the people who live this life keep showing up.
