Chadron State Park Offers October Fly-Fishing Class With Equipment Provided

Want to learn to fly fish without buying a pile of equipment before your first lesson? Chadron State Park has a hands-on class scheduled for October 10, with the rods, materials and tools provided.

Nebraska Game and Parks will host the workshop, taught by members of the Cornhusker Fly Fishers Club. It runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mountain time and covers casting, fly tying and basic knots to help anglers get started on trout and panfish. New and experienced fly fishers are welcome.

The class is limited to 25 participants. The cost is $25 per person for lunch, refreshments and facilities. Use the registration link in the event announcement; payment instructions follow by email from the club. An announced capacity is not a guarantee that seats are still available.

Parents should check with the organizers before signing up younger children. The instruction uses a 9-foot, 5- or 6-weight fly rod, and organizers note that children under about 12 may have difficulty handling it comfortably. There is nothing wrong with being the person who needs help with a knot. Everybody started there. A day learning from someone who can watch your cast and correct it is a practical way to get beyond watching fishing videos and start fishing yourself.
