Colorado Mule Deer Winter Range Gets a 1,200-Acre Habitat Boost Near Eagle

A Colorado mule deer winter range project is getting real money and real work behind it.

The Mule Deer Foundation is partnering with the Eagle Ranch HOA, BLM, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife on a habitat restoration and fuels reduction project south of Eagle, Colorado. The work covers roughly 1,200 acres tied to important winter range and migration habitat for the Brush Creek mule deer herd.

Eagle Ranch HOA is putting $111,000 toward removing encroaching pinyon-juniper on nearby slopes. That opens sagebrush habitat for mule deer and other sagebrush-dependent wildlife while also reducing wildfire risk around homes in the Eagle River Valley.

That is the part too many people miss: habitat work is not just feel-good conservation language. When it is done right, it puts better forage and cover on the ground, keeps migration country functioning, and can make rural communities safer from fire.

Mule deer do not need more speeches. They need winter range, migration corridors, and people willing to spend money and sweat on the dirt. This project checks those boxes.
