Florida Gulf Greater Amberjack Season Opens September 1

Florida Gulf anglers are getting a short, defined shot at greater amberjack this fall.

FWC issued an executive order modifying the 2026 recreational season for greater amberjack in Florida state waters of the Gulf. The season opens September 1, runs through October 13, and closes at 12:01 a.m. on October 14. That lines Florida state waters up with NOAA’s season in adjacent federal waters.

That consistency matters. When state and federal seasons do not match, anglers get confusion, enforcement headaches, and pressure that can blow through quotas before managers even have a clean picture of what happened. FWC says matching the seasons is meant to prevent quota overages and help the greater amberjack stock keep rebuilding.

Private recreational anglers targeting greater amberjack or other listed reef fish also need to be signed up for Florida’s State Reef Fish Angler Designation, which has to be renewed annually. That system feeds the State Reef Fish Survey, and FWC says that data is now being used in greater amberjack management.

This is the part anglers should not ignore. If we want better seasons, better numbers, and rules that reflect what is actually happening offshore, then harvest data has to be tighter than guesswork. Take the legal opportunity, know the dates, sign up where required, and give managers real information instead of leaving the future of the fishery to stale estimates and politics.
