Florida Opens Gulf Gag Grouper Season September 1-30

Florida Gulf anglers are getting a short gag grouper season, and the dates are tight enough that nobody should be guessing at the ramp.

FWC issued an executive order setting the 2026 recreational gag grouper season in Florida Gulf state waters for September 1 through September 30. The season closes at 12:01 a.m. on October 1. Monroe County state waters are excluded.

That state season matches NOAA’s recently announced season in adjacent federal waters. That matters because mismatched state and federal seasons create confusion, push anglers into enforcement traps, and can burn through quota in a hurry. FWC says keeping the seasons consistent should help prevent a recreational quota overage and reduce the chance of a quota payback in 2027.

Private recreational anglers targeting gag grouper or other listed reef fish from a private vessel also need Florida’s State Reef Fish Angler Designation, and it has to be renewed every year. FWC says State Reef Fish Survey data is now being used in Gulf gag grouper management.

This is the deal: take the legal shot, know the boundary, know the dates, and do the reporting piece right. Better data is one of the few tools anglers have to push back against lazy closures and bad estimates. If we want more honest seasons, we have to give managers numbers that are harder to ignore.
