Mississippi Reopens Recreational Red Snapper Season for September Weekends

Mississippi red snapper anglers are getting another shot, but it comes with the kind of rules everybody needs to know before backing down the ramp.

The state recreational red snapper season in Mississippi territorial waters reopens Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, at 12:01 a.m. local time. Open days will be Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with one extra open day on Monday, Sept. 7 for the holiday weekend. Outside that exception, Mississippi territorial waters are closed to red snapper harvest Monday through Thursday.

The limit is two red snapper per person per day with a 16-inch total-length minimum. The season closes when Mississippi’s private recreational annual catch limit is projected to be met, and it can also close or remain closed if the Gulf-wide quota is reached.

That is quota-managed fishing in plain English: enjoy the opportunity, but do not act like the numbers are optional. Red snapper access has been fought over for years, and every clean trip, legal limit and accurate harvest count helps keep recreational fishermen in the conversation.

Go when it is open, measure your fish, know the daily schedule and do not be the guy who gives enforcement a reason to make an example. Legal harvest is worth defending, and that starts with doing it right.
