North Carolina Sets 2026 Recreational Flounder Season for September 1-14

North Carolina flounder anglers have their 2026 dates, and it is another short window that nobody should miss by assuming the season is wide open.

The recreational flounder season is set for September 1-14, 2026. The minimum size is 15 inches total length, measured from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail. The bag limit is one flounder per person, per day.

Hook and line is allowed, and so is gigging. Harvesting flounder with a Recreational Commercial Gear License is prohibited during this recreational season. Anglers also have to report all kept flounder through the Division of Marine Fisheries online form or phone app.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission announced the same dates for Coastal and Joint Fishing Waters, which at least keeps the calendar simple for anglers moving between jurisdictions. Simple does not mean generous. Two weeks and one fish a day is a narrow opportunity, and it puts the responsibility on anglers to know the rulebook before a legal fish hits the deck.

This is the reality of modern coastal fisheries. If managers say a stock needs tight harvest controls, legal anglers can either follow the rules and help keep a season on the books, or give ammunition to everyone who wants less access next time. Conservation and harvest are not enemies. Waste, ignorance, and poaching are the enemies.
