Louisiana Reopens Private Recreational Red Snapper for Two Four-Day Periods

Louisiana red snapper fishermen are getting two more shots at the private recreational season, but the window is tight and the details matter.

LA Creel data shows 35,109 pounds remain in Louisiana’s 2026 annual private recreational red snapper allocation. That is about 4 percent of the state’s 882,439-pound allocation, enough for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to reopen the season for two four-day periods.

The private recreational and state charter harvest of red snapper in Louisiana state waters and federal waters off Louisiana reopens at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, and runs through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. It opens again at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, and runs through 11:59 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7, then closes until further notice.

This does not apply to federally permitted charter boats operating under federal seasons and federal rules. That distinction matters. Know what vessel you are on, know which rules apply, and do not turn a good fishing opportunity into a citation because somebody guessed wrong at the dock.

This is quota-based management in real life. When harvest estimates show room left, fishermen should get access to the fish. When the number is used up, the season closes. It is not perfect, but it beats managing by politics and rumors. Go legal, keep clean records, and make the days count.
