Quest for the Crest Winners Turn Sailfish Victory Into Conservation Data

A sailfish tournament win is worth more when it puts real data back into the fishery.

The Quest for the Crest Sailfish Series and Fish Bluewater have tied championship bragging rights to billfish conservation through The Billfish Foundation’s Tag and Release Program. As part of the Sailfish Challenge, the winning team earns a spot on a satellite tagging expedition with TBF scientists.

This year, the champions aboard Priceless, captained by Jorge Sanchez out of Coral Gables, earned that opportunity after a comeback win. Later this year, the crew is expected to help deploy a satellite tag bearing the team’s name, adding movement, habitat-use, and behavior data to sailfish research.

That is the right way to connect competition and conservation. Offshore tournaments catch plenty of heat from people who do not understand the sport, but responsible crews, tag-and-release work, and science partnerships can help managers understand highly migratory fish that cross lines on a chart without asking permission.

Fishermen should not apologize for competing, harvesting legally where allowed, or chasing big fish. But we should also back the science that keeps those fisheries alive. A trophy fades. A good tag return can help shape better management for years.
