Clean Senate Farm Bill Draft Keeps Sporting Dogs Out of the Crosshairs

Working dogs and hunting dogs dodged a bad one in the latest Senate Farm Bill draft.

The clean draft released by Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman leaves out the anti-hunting restrictions and greyhound-ban language that sportsmen had been fighting. That matters because once broad animal-rights language gets stuffed into federal law, it rarely stays neatly inside the box people promised it would.

Houndsmen, bird dog owners, retriever handlers, and anyone who understands working dogs should pay attention to fights like this. The people pushing these restrictions know exactly what they are doing. They start with one target, soften the language, and then use it later against legal hunting, breeding, field trials, and animal ownership.

A clean draft is good news. It is not a reason to go back to sleep. If you hunt behind a dog, raise dogs, or just believe working animals still belong in American outdoor life, this is the kind of policy fight you cannot ignore.
