Louisiana Opens Recreational Alligator Harvest Lottery for October Season

Louisiana is opening a recreational alligator harvest lottery, and this is what regulated use of a recovered predator resource looks like.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says applications open Aug. 20 and run through Aug. 30. The recreational season will run Oct. 1-31 across eight harvest zones. This is separate from the longtime commercial alligator lottery application that closed earlier in the summer.

Applications have to be filed through the LDWF licensing website under Lottery Applications. There is a non-refundable $50 application fee for each zone application, and residents can apply for more than one zone. Applicants must be Louisiana residents, at least 16 years old, and meet hunter education requirements. If selected, they will also need a $25 Resident Alligator Sports Hunter License.

Alligator management is a good reminder that conservation is not the same thing as locking wildlife away forever. When populations can support harvest, states should create legal, traceable ways for regular people to participate. That builds buy-in, funds management, and keeps the resource tied to the people who live with it.

If you draw, know your zone, know the rules, and do it right. A legal tag is not just permission to kill an animal. It is a responsibility to prove harvest and conservation can still stand on the same bank.
