Louisiana Raises Red Snapper Limit to Five for Independence Day Weekend

Louisiana red snapper anglers get a bigger holiday window this week, but it is a short one and folks need to keep the dates straight.

LDWF Secretary Tyler Bosworth signed an emergency declaration raising the recreational red snapper bag limit to five fish per person per day for Thursday through Sunday of Independence Day weekend, July 2 through July 5.

On July 6, the limit goes back to four fish per person per day. That matters. Do not be the guy at the dock claiming he heard it was five all season because somebody shared half a post online.

This is a good example of state-level fisheries management giving anglers opportunity when the numbers allow it. Red snapper has been one of the most fought-over fisheries in the Gulf, and Louisiana anglers have spent years dealing with seasons, quotas, federal-state tension, and data arguments. When managers open a little more room for legal harvest, take it seriously and follow the rules.

LDWF is also reminding anglers to use descending devices to reduce barotrauma on released red snapper and other reef fish. That is not feel-good window dressing. A fish brought up from depth can look alive at the surface and still die if it is not returned properly. Good release practices help keep future seasons and limits defensible.

Enjoy the extra fish if you are headed offshore, but do it clean. Know the dates, count every fish, respect the limit, use the right release gear, and bring back a legal cooler nobody has to make excuses for. That is how sportsmen keep proving harvest and conservation belong in the same boat.
