Wisconsin Deer Season Recommendations Go Before the Natural Resources Board

Wisconsin deer hunters have a Natural Resources Board meeting worth watching this week.

The Wisconsin NRB is scheduled to meet Wednesday, June 24, starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Comfort Inn and Suites in Black River Falls. The agenda includes approval of the 2026 deer season recommendations, information from the 2026 Wildlife Management spring hearing, and public comment opportunities. The meeting is also set to stream live on YouTube.

Deer season recommendations are not paperwork. They decide how opportunity gets spread across the state, how managers respond to herd conditions, and how hunters, landowners, and local communities deal with the reality on the ground. Dates, zones, antlerless opportunity, and management priorities all matter when you are trying to balance healthy deer numbers with hunting access and habitat pressure.

Wisconsin hunters know this better than anybody. Some places need more harvest. Some places need restraint. Some families are fighting for access. Some landowners are fighting crop damage. Some public-land hunters just want a fair shot at a season that still feels like deer hunting instead of a spreadsheet.

That is why sportsmen need to pay attention before the vote is over. If the recommendations match the biology, back them. If something looks like politics dressed up as management, challenge it. If public comment opens the door, use it. The people who buy licenses, put venison in freezers, report harvest, and fund conservation should not be quiet while deer policy gets shaped.

Good deer management is not anti-hunter. It is what keeps the resource strong enough for the next season and the next generation. But it only works when decision-makers hear from hunters who are willing to speak in facts, not just frustration. Wisconsin has a chance to do that on June 24.
